Do Chihuahuas Get Sick Easily?

By Puppy Dreams Editorial Team · October 20, 2025

Chihuahuas are small, spirited, and surprisingly hardy dogs, but their tiny size does make them more vulnerable to certain health issues than larger breeds. While they don’t necessarily get sick easily, they do require attentive care and a watchful eye to stay healthy and strong.

Because of their delicate build, Chihuahuas are sensitive to temperature changes — they can catch chills or develop colds if left in drafty or cold environments for too long. It’s why many owners dress their Chihuahuas in light sweaters or coats during colder months. Their fast metabolism also means they need to eat small, regular meals to maintain blood sugar levels, as they’re prone to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), especially as puppies.

Dental problems are another common concern. Their tiny mouths can lead to overcrowded teeth and plaque buildup, so regular brushing and professional dental cleanings are essential. Additionally, some Chihuahuas are prone to tracheal collapse, heart murmurs, and luxating patellas (loose kneecaps), though these can often be managed with proper care and early detection.

Ultimately, Chihuahuas don’t fall ill more often than other dogs — they just have specific needs that come with their size. With a balanced diet, regular vet checkups, and a warm, stress-free environment, your Chihuahua can live a long, happy, and healthy life full of energy and personality.
