Is It Bad If German Shepherd Ears Don’t Stand Up?

By Puppy Dreams Editorial Team · October 18, 2025

Not necessarily — it’s actually quite common for German Shepherd puppies’ ears to take time before standing upright. Most German Shepherds develop their iconic pointed ears naturally between 5 and 8 months of age, as the cartilage strengthens and the muscles mature. However, some dogs’ ears may take longer, and in a few cases, they might never fully stand up.

If your German Shepherd’s ears are still floppy after 8 months, it doesn’t always mean something is wrong. Genetics, nutrition, teething, or rough play (like excessive ear pulling) can all affect how quickly or whether the ears stand. For example, dogs from working lines sometimes have softer ear cartilage that makes upright ears less likely.

To help encourage proper ear development, make sure your puppy has a balanced diet rich in protein and calcium to support cartilage and bone strength. Avoid handling or bending the ears too much, as this can weaken the tissue. Some owners and breeders use temporary taping methods to gently support ear position, but this should only be done under the guidance of an experienced veterinarian or breeder.

In short — floppy ears don’t harm your German Shepherd’s health or intelligence. Whether upright or down, your dog will be just as loyal, alert, and beautiful. The upright look is classic, but their personality and confidence matter much more than ear position.
